Pool Renewal Notes · Cost calculator
Enter the interior square footage, choose plaster, quartz or pebble, set how much preparation the shell needs, and toggle add-ons. The calculator scales HomeAdvisor's 2026 per-square-foot finish rates and Shasta's per-pool ranges into a planning estimate for the interior plus tile, coping and equipment.
Skip to the calculatorBase rates are anchored to: HomeAdvisor, Pool Resurfacing Cost (2026); HomeAdvisor, Pool Resurfacing Cost (2026); Shasta Pools, Cost to Replace Your Pool Tile, Deck or Interior Finish (2026); Shasta Pools, Cost to Replace Your Pool Tile, Deck or Interior Finish (2026); Bob Vila, Pool Remodel Cost (2026); HomeAdvisor, Pool Heater Installation Cost (2026).
By the numbers
$5,500 per 1,000 sq ft
Plaster costs ~$5,500 per 1,000 sq ft; aggregate $6,500; tile up to $30,000
HomeAdvisor's per-finish pricing shows why most homeowners land on plaster or a pebble/quartz aggregate. Tile is five to six times the cost but is the longest-lasting interior.
HomeAdvisor, Pool Resurfacing Cost (2026)$3,500–$6,500
Replaster costs $3,500–$6,500; quartz $7k–$10k; pebble $6k–$15k; tile $15k–$30k
Shasta Pools' January 2026 renovation guide prices each interior finish for a typical residential pool and notes labor is roughly half of tile jobs. Pebble finishes have become the mid-market default for longevity.
Shasta Pools, Cost to Replace Your Pool Tile, Deck or Interior Finish (2026)5–10 vs 20+ years
Standard plaster lasts 5–10 years; quartz 10–15; aggregate 15–20; pebble 20+
Shasta Pools' lifespan table shows a pebble finish can outlast plaster by two to four cycles. Paying roughly double up front for pebble often costs less per year of service than replastering repeatedly.
Shasta Pools, Cost to Replace Your Pool Tile, Deck or Interior Finish (2026)$45–$65 per hour
Resurfacing labor is $45–$65 an hour; draining adds $175–$225 before the job
HomeAdvisor's 2026 breakdown also lists a $250 average pre-resurfacing cleaning. Drain, refill and water-balancing costs are easy to forget when comparing resurfacing bids.
HomeAdvisor, Pool Resurfacing Cost (2026)Resurfacing pricing is area times a finish rate, adjusted for preparation, plus a list of add-ons. HomeAdvisor's 2026 guide gives $5,500 per 1,000 sq ft for plaster and about $6,500 per 1,000 square feet for aggregate; Shasta's per-pool ranges of $3,500–$6,500 for replaster, $7,000 to $10,000 for quartz and $6,000 to $15,000 for pebble set the tiers. The base rate is set so a 1,000 square foot quartz job with moderate preparation lands near HomeAdvisor's $11,000 average.
The add-ons use the same guides: waterline tile at Shasta's $25 to $30 per linear foot, coping at Bob Vila's $30 to $50, a heater at HomeAdvisor's $3,094 average, LED lights at Bob Vila's $450 to $1,700, salt conversion at HomeAdvisor's $500 to $2,500. Everything is national. Read the assumptions before you use the number.
Floor plus walls. A rectangle's floor is length times width; the walls are the perimeter times the average depth. A 15 by 30 pool with a 3.5 to 6 foot profile has a floor of 450 square feet and walls of roughly 90 feet of perimeter times 4.75 feet average depth, about 430 square feet, so about 900 in total. Freeform pools run 10 to 20% under their bounding rectangle; deep diving pools run over. If unsure, enter 1,000 and adjust.
Contractors measure differently, and the proposal should state the figure they priced. Two 'pebble' quotes that differ by $2,000 often differ on square footage before anything else. The resurfacing page covers the rest of the comparison.
Standard plaster is the low tier at about 55% of the base rate, with Shasta's 5 to 10 year life. Quartz is the base rate, 10 to 15 years. Pebble is the high tier at about 140%, with a 20-plus year life; polished aggregate and tile sit above the calculator's range and are priced on the service page. Shasta's lifespan table, 5–10 vs 20+ years, is the reason to consider paying more.
Preparation is the shell's condition. Sound means a bond coat over an intact old finish with few hollows. Moderate means chip-out of loose areas, a normal count of hollow spots and minor crack repair. Heavy means a full chip-out to gunite, many hollows, structural crack routing or rusted steel exposed. HomeAdvisor's labor rate of $45–$65 per hour is where the preparation difference lives.

Waterline tile belongs, because it is set while the water is down and the finish is off; skipping it and retiling later means a second drain. Coping belongs if it is loose or you are changing the profile. The main drain cover is included in the base as a safety item. The pump, heater, lights and salt are equipment decisions that are cheapest during the same visit but stand on their own; our analysis of EIA's 2024 survey found 48.2% of pool homes without a variable-speed pump, and for those the pump toggle is the highest-payback line in the tool.
Deck overlay is not in the calculator; SKIN Microplaster's and Shasta's per-square-foot ranges are on the remodel page and in the deck comparison. Use the comparison pages for the equipment choices before toggling them here.
| Add-on | Calculator figure | Source range |
|---|---|---|
| Waterline tile (90 linear ft) | $2,500 | $25 to $30 per linear ft (Shasta 2026) |
| Coping replacement (90 linear ft) | $3,600 | $30 to $50 per linear ft (Bob Vila 2026) |
| Variable-speed pump | $1,800 | $1,200 to $2,500 installed; 1 to 3 year payback (Pool Goods 2026) |
| Heater | $3,100 | $3,094 average (HomeAdvisor 2026) |
| LED lights (two) | $1,200 | $450 to $1,700 each (Bob Vila 2026) |
| Saltwater conversion | $1,500 | $500 to $2,500 (HomeAdvisor 2026) |
The tool returns working days scaled by area and preparation, calibrated so a 1,000 square foot pool with moderate preparation lands near a week of on-site work, consistent with CostHelper's 3 days vs 11 days. Drain to first swim runs longer, 10–14 calendar days in one Orlando contractor's 2026 breakdown, because the refill and a week of brushing follow the work. It does not include the rest of the startup cure of about 28 days, during which the pool is full but heating and salt are delayed, or scheduling gaps between trades on a remodel, which Bob Vila's 4 to 8 week figure covers.
Our analysis of the EIA's 2024 household survey found 41.9% of U.S. pool homes use the pool one to six months and 47.7% use it all year. In freeze climates the on-site days plus the fill must finish before frost; in the Sun Belt winter is the working season. The regional notes cover the calendar.

Usually preparation: a full chip-out, more hollows than the base count, a beam repair or a leaking niche found on inspection. Or scope: a deck overlay, a raised wall or a premium finish above pebble. Compare line by line, and ask which item explains the gap. If the finish alone is far above the range, ask for the square footage they priced.
Draining and initial startup are in the base. Refill water is not, because it depends on your utility; a 20,000-gallon pool is often $100 to $300 on the water bill. Deck work and reshaping are excluded.
Outside the calculator. Shasta puts a full tile interior at $15,000 to $30,000 and HomeAdvisor up to $30,000 per 1,000 square feet, with labor about half. The resurfacing page has the ranges; a tile setter's site visit is the only reliable number.
Partly. Tap the walls with a rubber mallet: a drum sound means a hollow. Look for sheets of finish lifting, cracks you can fit a coin into, rust stains from steel. If you find several of these, choose heavy. A contractor sounds the whole pool once it is drained, which is why the proposal should carry a hollow-spot allowance.
If it is single-speed and older than about eight years, Pool Goods' modeling shows $345 to $735 a year in savings with a one to three year payback, and Bob Vila gives pumps 8 to 12 years. Replacing it during the renovation avoids a second visit and lets it run continuously during the finish cure.
Material and troweling labor, plus the exposure step. Shasta's per-pool ranges overlap, with pebble at $6,000 to $15,000 and quartz at $7,000 to $10,000, so a standard pebble can undercut a premium quartz. The calculator uses the midpoints; the proposal will use the product.
Add the spa's interior area, typically 100 to 150 square feet, to the pool's. Spas are usually finished in the same product at the same time. Tile-lined spas are priced separately by a tile setter.
